What phosphorus does
Phosphorus is the second most abundant mineral in your body. Together with calcium it forms bones and teeth, and it’s part of ATP, the molecule cells use for energy, and of DNA.
How much
Adults need around 700 mg a day. Deficiency is rare.
Plant sources
Legumes, whole grains, oats, quinoa, nuts and seeds.
How many portions of each food would cover a day's phosphorus?
A note
Much of the phosphorus in seeds and grains is stored as phytate, which is partly absorbed. Soaking and sprouting help (Soak & sprout). People with kidney disease often need to limit phosphorus.
